Become a Trustee
Here at The Vitiligo Society we have recently completed a significant digital transformation and are embarking on an exciting new era. We have launched a fantastic new website and online magazine, The VitLife, which gives those living with vitiligo a storytelling platform and supportive community. We are also exploring how Artificial Intelligence, mobile apps and other exciting technologies can enable us to deliver greater impact. We are eager to hear from enthusiastic volunteers to join our Board of Trustees and support our global mission.
What will you be doing?
The Vitiligo Society is a London based charity with a global reach whose main aim is to support people with the skin condition, vitiligo. Vitiligo affects 1-2% of the world’s population and can also have detrimental psychological effects on people’s lives.
We are a volunteer-led charity with a small group of friendly trustees who would love your help in a variety of different areas. We have opportunities, big and small, across areas such as fundraising, clinical research, social media, content writing, accounting and web administration. Whatever your superpower is, trust us we will put it to good use!
These roles are on a volunteer basis and expected to take up a minimum of around 4 hours per month. You can be located anywhere in the UK, but will be expected to travel to London around twice per year. Most Board meetings will be done via video conference. In all cases, the roles require a bias towards digital and web-based initiatives. All roles are Director roles, and will form part of the Board of Directors, with full voting rights.
If this sounds like you and you’re interested to know more, please get in touch for an initial conversation :o)
What are we looking for?
We’re looking for self-starters who want to roll up their sleeves and put their skills to use to help others.
We welcome people of all experience levels who are excited by the opportunity to make a difference not only in improving how the Society operates but also improving the lives of tens of millions of people with vitiligo all around the world.
Following our radical digital transformation, we are punching above our weight and doing ‘big charity’ things despite our modest resources. We’ve taken inspiration from tech powerhouses like Mozilla and Automattic(WordPress) by closing our office in favour of being a remote ‘Cloud-first’ organisation reducing our operational overheads, and become more agile. Our aim is to innovate and deliver the highest impact for our members and the vitiligo community in the leanest possible way. We are looking for radical thinkers who can help us to continue to reimagine how the Society (and small charities in general) can thrive in the digital age.
Passion is our number one criteria – if this is you then please get in touch.
What difference will you make?
The Vitiligo Society’s mission has four primary goals:
Educate – provide information, raise awareness and promote acceptance of vitiligo
Support – through online community, support groups and face-to-face events
Inspire – through story telling and sharing personal experiences
Partner – with local and global vitiligo medical professions
You will have the opportunity to contribute to and enhance the proposition we provide to those living with or affected by vitiligo. Your work will reach people who really need our help – it will inspire, encourage and promote a more inclusive atmosphere for those dealing with vitiligo.
What’s in it for the volunteer?
You will be working closely with our passionate board of trustees where you will feel empowered to have your own ideas and run with them.
If you haven’t heard of vitiligo before then this is an amazing opportunity to discover a condition and community of those living with it that is unique and can involve a number of additional challenges, both physical and mental.
Being a trustee is a fantastic development opportunity. You will gain Board level experience, and exposure to topics and challenges that you are unlikely to experience during your ‘day job’.
If you are suffering from vitiligo yourself or know someone who is then we would love you to share a personal story.
You will see first hand the impact this has on our community and the difference you have made.
We’ve defined five roles and the expectations of a board member of the Society. Previous relevant experience is helpful, but we will consider candidates of all levels and backgrounds. We look for people with the right attitude, drive and a love for making positive change in peoples lives.
