US vitiligo documentary wins award

Posted on 7th May 2024  2 minute read

We were thrilled to hear that More Than Our Skin, crafted by our US friends VitFriends and directed by Tonia Magras—a three-time Emmy-award winner —was awarded the Best Documentary Feature at the 2024 Los Angeles Film Awards. It’s also a finalist at the New York International Film Awards.

The film is described as a documentary exploring in depth the effects of living with vitiligo through the stories of those who live with it.

The film features the real and personal stories of five women living with vitiligo, Katrina, Millicent, Valarie, Patricia, and Alicia. It includes adult themes such as depression, suicide, isolation and addiction. The campaign states:

We want the individuals telling their stories to change the narrative of what people think of Vitiligo. We want to eliminate the stigmas by allowing the viewing audience to meet the people who will share their stories of pain and promise along with their communities who have provided support, love, and purpose to these courageous group of women. We are traveling to the homes and communities of each woman portrayed in this film – conducting interviews with spouses, children, members in their community, parents, and friends – along with the women themselves. Often, these interviews are personal and painful – but part of their story to let the viewing audience know how living with Vitiligo affects them individually.

The Los Angeles Film Awards (LAFA) is a monthly competition for filmmakers and screenwriters from all over the world. LAFA is the first festival to receive 400+ five-star reviews on FilmFreeway, out of over 8,000 film festivals.

‘Our mission is to promote films, and be another step up in the filmmakers’ careers. ’

Reflecting on the award director Tonia said:

“I am beyond thrilled to share this powerful story with audiences around the globe. The culmination of three years of compiling this story has been some of the most rewarding work of my life, and I know that it will change hearts and minds when it comes to how we see and treat each other.”
