Highlights from a recent Manchester meetup
In this blog, guest writer Nirjeet shares highlights from the most recent meeting of a local Manchester-based support group.
From ‘Vi-tea-ligo’ to ‘Vitiligo Allies’
You might remember back in March my friend Reuben shared news via The VitLife blog that we had hosted our first Manchester vitiligo meetup which we called our “vi-TEA-ligo” meeting. During this first meeting six individuals affected by vitiligo got together in our local cafe to share their experiences with vitiligo. We were thrilled to be able to create a safe space for everyone to chat and share, free from judgment. Check out our first VitLife blog post here.
Since that first meeting, we have been exploring what we want to achieve, and we decided to rename our group – ‘Vitiligo Allies’. Our aim is to provide comprehensive support, resources, and advocacy for individuals affected by vitiligo, empowering them to embrace their uniqueness and live confidently. We strive to foster a sense of community and belonging, promote awareness and education, and advocate for positive change in how vitiligo is perceived and treated. Initially we want to do this by focusing on building a strong local vitiligo support group in the Manchester community.
Reflections from our second meeting
We recently hosted our second meet-up of the year, and it was an inspiring day filled with connection, support, and shared stories. Although it turned out to be an all-male gathering by chance, the conversations quickly evolved beyond vitiligo to encompass our ambitions, careers, relationships, and more. We broadened the membership of this second meeting, welcoming not only those living with vitiligo but also allies and supporters from diverse backgrounds. This helped to create a vibrant and inclusive atmosphere. Reuben shared his experience of a new white patch on his arm, while I discussed the colour change in my eyelashes – we all reflected on how vitiligo is a dynamic and ever-changing journey.
Like our first meetup, Manchester was the place where we held our second meeting, on a Sunday morning in a local cafe. We shared our stories and experiences whilst enjoying some coffee and brunch.
What made this meetup truly special was how vitiligo served as a catalyst for deeper discussions. Together, we explored various aspects of our lives and brainstormed ways to support each other. The event welcomed not only those living with vitiligo but also allies and supporters from diverse backgrounds, creating a vibrant and inclusive atmosphere.

What does the future hold for Vitiligo Allies?
We want to educate, empower, and connect individuals—both with and without vitiligo—creating a safe space where our condition sparks meaningful conversations. The laughter shared, stories exchanged, and friendships formed during this meet-up highlighted the beauty of our unique journeys.
Reuben and I want to say a heartfelt thank you to everyone who attended and contributed—you play a vital role in fostering this community. Vitiligo is not just a moment to celebrate; it’s a daily reminder of the rich diversity within our lives. While we may stand out because of our skin, together we shine even brighter through our character, values, and the positive impact we make in the world.
If you are in the Manchester area, then we invite you to join us at our upcoming meetups, where everyone is welcome to share their experiences and learn more about this captivating condition. We hope to have one more meeting before we close out 2024, so please keep an eye on our Facebook and LinkedIn pages where details of future meetings will be shared.
