Demi Sims shares how her self-confidence was affected by her vitiligo

Posted on 28th February 2023  3 minute read

We love when celebrities speak out about their vitiligo, and one of the best current advocates for how to embrace the conditions is Demi Sims. Demi has previously spoken openly about growing up into adulthood with skin-condition vitiligo and done a huge amount to raise awareness about the condition via her social media pages.

Last week the TOWIE star detailed her battle with self-confidence as she compared herself now to her teenage years, when she first developed the condition. Demi was first diagnosed with vitiligo following a girls holiday at the age of 16. Whilst she admits she ‘used to hate’ the patches, Demi now says she wouldn’t change them for the world.

Sharing an inspiring post last Wednesday, Demi prompted her 527k followers to feel confident too while assuring that everybody suffers insecurities. The post included a behind-the-scenes picture on a photoshoot, as well as another picture in the post was from her teenage years, when she had patches on her forehead and undereyes.

The star explained:

After speaking on my stories about my vitiligo the other day a lot more people was asking me to speak about it more, the 2nd picture was when I was a young teenager and the first year I developed it, I was able to get rid of my forehead patches but everything else wanted to stay.

I was really down that year as you can imagine, as this was over 10 years ago I thought I looked weird and it really took a toll on me mentally 😔 as I got older some of my patches have grown as you can see on my neck it has got way bigger now, and you notice them way more in the summer when I’ve caught a tan.

I used to hate these patches whereas now I find them so me, I find them kinda edgy and cool, If someone offered me a treatment tomorrow that would get rid of them I hand on my heart would say No! Piss off 🤣 i owe a huge deal of respect and thank yous to the people who have always urged me to talk more about it and to love it, otherwise I would always shy away!

And I hope people who are reading this going through anything similar or knows anyone who is going through something similar will take what I am bout to say into their heart.

Nobody is perfect, even the most beautiful person in the world has insecurities, the person you walk past in the street, or at the bar has insecurities. Your old school teacher had insecurities, it’s something that we all deal with throughout our life. So please don’t feel like your insecurities should stop you from being you, going out having fun and living happy. Over time you will learn to love yourself a little bit more and more, baby steps eventually add up too giant steps, and I’m proud of every single one of you”

Anyways I loved this photo from my shoot I never got round too posting it 🤍🫶

We want to thank everyone who uses their platform to educate others about vitiligo. Whether you embrace your skin or continue to hope for more effective treatments, we can all work together to raise awareness to help combat the social stigma that many people still experience with their vitiligo.
