Lego introduces more figures with vitiligo to it’s toy range

Posted on 1st February 2023  2 minute read

We have been thrilled to see toy ranges feature characters with vitiligo and new produces just keep coming.

It started with a single Barbie Doll being released back in 2019 along side other new dolls. The collection, which also included a doll with no hair, a prosthetic limb and a wheel chair, was part of the fashionista range, which aimed to promote diversity and celebrate the importance of inclusivity.  This range was then expanded in 2021 and 2022 to include another Barbie and a Ken doll.

Kim Culmone, SVP, Global Head of Design Barbie & Fashion Dolls at Mattel, explained to us that “The expansion of our Barbie Fashionistas range shows our commitment to designing a line that celebrates all kinds of beauty and evolves the brand to be more reflective of the world kids see around them. Representation matters because seeing yourself or others reflected in the dolls you play with has the power to build self-esteem and empathy.” Read our full article here.

In early 2022 we then saw toy brand Rainbow HighTM from MGA Entertainment release their first doll, ‘Jewel Richie‘ with vitiligo.

Michelle Lilley, Marketing Director for UK and Ireland at MGA Entertainment, said: “Championing diversity and inclusion is – and has always been – central to MGA Entertainment. Brands such as BratzTM and L.O.L. Surprise!TM have led the way on representation, both in terms of ethnicities and visible differences. This recent launch from Rainbow High continues this commitment and we’re proud to have launched a new series of dolls that features characters with vitiligo and albinism.” Read our full article here.

At the end of 2022 we saw the LEGO Group debut their first minifigure with vitiligo as part of their Table Football Set. We were so excited as all our team are huge fans of the brand. Even more exciting is that eagle eyed fans have spotted two more characters in the new 2023 sets now available. This includes the Organic Grocery Set and The Sword Outpost.

All these products are of course in addition to our much loved vitiligo teddy bear, which is exclusive to our shop.

It is wonderful to see children in our community have access to toys that represent them, and we can’t wait to see which other brands start increasing the diversity of their character range too.
