Our community nominate their top 3 cosmetic camouflage products for vitiligo skin

Posted on 11th April 2023  3 minute read

We are often asked to recommend ways for people to cover their vitiligo, but as a charity we try to avoid recommending specific products. Instead, we decided to ask our community to share the products they use and why, hoping that this will help others find cosmetics that will help them too.

In March 2023 we asked our community to share their favourite skin-coverage products with us. Over a hundred people responded, enabling us to write an article series sharing the most recommended products from our community under the categories: Cosmetic Camouflage Products; Full Coverage Makeup and Foundations, & Self Tanners.

This first article shares the most popular cosmetic camouflage products as shared by the vitiligo community in our survey. Please note before trying any new products on your skin you should always consult your dermatologist.

What do we mean by cosmetic camouflage?

Skin camouflage is designed to replicate the colour of non-vitiligo skin. Different brands of skin camouflage have different textures, consistencies, and sun-protection properties and some may stay on the skin longer than others. This means that one brand may be better suited to your skin than another. The products featured below are those that our community recommended to us, but you should always consult your doctor when considering changing your skincare routine.

Dermacolor

Dermacolor Camouflage Cream is a highly pigmented make-up designed to correct and cover skin discolorations. Dermacolor Camouflage Cream is especially suitable for face and neck. Dermacolor Camouflage claims to last even under extreme conditions like swimming, heat and physical strain.

What our community said:

Dermacolor received the most recommendations of all of the products shared by our community in the survey. It was most recommended by people identifying as having medium and dark skin tones. It was recommended by people to had various skin types, including normal skin, combination skin and sensitive skin. Recommendations came from the level of coverage it provided and the natural range of shade available.

Vitiliglow

Vitiliglow is camouflage cover for the skin, which blends depigmented patches with remaining skin tone, specifically designed for people with vitiligo. It claims to be long-lasting, water resistant, sweat-proof, rub-proof, and has been designed to cover even the most awkwardly placed and largest of depigmented patches.

What our community said:

Vitiliglow was most recommended by people identifying as having fair and medium tones. It was recommended most by people to had dry skin. It scored well for its level of coverage and for being natural looking when applied. Vitiliglow was the only product to receive specific comments on its water-resistant qualities and its resistance to rubbing off on clothes.

Covermark

Covermark has been established for over 80 years. It claims it’s foundation is 100% water and sweat proof, lasting 24 hours, and provides SPF 30 with natural filters which are highly recommended for sensitive skin. It works in combination with a finishing powder applied after to set the foundation on the skin to render a matte, natural-looking result all day long.

What our community said:

Covermark recieved fewer mentions than the other two products featured, but scored highly for level of cover, being natural looking and providing a close match to skin tone. Covermark was most recommended by people identifying as having darker skin tones
