Policies & Governance
Our vitiligo charity governance and policies explain how The Vitiligo Society operates responsibly, transparently and in the best interests of the community we serve. As a UK registered charity, we take governance seriously. For this reason, we put clear policies and strong oversight in place to maintain trust, accountability and good practice.
Strong governance helps us make ethical decisions, manage resources effectively and remain focused on our charitable purpose.
How we are governed
The Vitiligo Society is governed by an independent Board of Trustees. Trustees guide the charity’s overall direction, oversee its finances and support long‑term sustainability. They ensure the organisation complies with charity law, meets regulatory requirements and operates in line with its stated objectives.
Rather than managing day‑to‑day operations, Trustees focus on oversight and accountability. Meanwhile, the staff team leads the delivery of services and activity. As a result, this separation supports clear leadership, sound decision‑making and effective governance.
Our vitiligo charity governance framework
Our governance framework sets out how the Society makes decisions, manages risk and meets its legal and ethical responsibilities. In practice, this framework includes:
- Regular trustee meetings and documented decision‑making
- Clear financial controls and monitoring
- Management of conflicts of interest
- Oversight of safeguarding, data protection and risk
- Ongoing review of policies and procedures
Together, these arrangements help ensure the charity remains transparent, compliant and effective.
Our key policies
We maintain a range of policies to guide how we work and how we support the people who engage with the charity. These policies apply across all areas of our activity, including support services, research work, volunteering and fundraising.
Our vitiligo charity governance and policies include:
We review and update these policies regularly to reflect best practice and legal requirements.

Safeguarding and accountability
Safeguarding is a priority for The Vitiligo Society. We actively work to create safe and inclusive spaces for everyone we support, including children, young people and adults at risk.
Clear procedures guide how we raise, record and respond to concerns. In doing so, we ensure concerns are handled appropriately, fairly and with respect for confidentiality.
Financial management
We manage our finances responsibly and in line with charity law. Trustees actively monitor income, expenditure and reserves to ensure the Society uses funds effectively and sustainably.
Further information about our finances and use of funds is available in our annual reports.
Continuous improvement
Good governance is not static. We regularly review our governance arrangements and policies to ensure they remain effective, relevant and aligned with our values.
Through strong vitiligo charity governance and policies, we aim to remain trusted, accountable and responsive to the needs of the vitiligo community.
